“Carol of the Bells” has its musical roots in the Ukrainian song “Shchedryk,” composed and arranged by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych in the early twentieth century. The English Christmas lyrics were written by American composer Peter J. Wilhousky in 1936. Wilhousky’s version transformed the original Ukrainian New Year song into a Christmas carol centered on the sound of bells. Pentatonix later brought the piece to a contemporary audience with a vocal arrangement built around their characteristic layered harmonies.
The music is recognizable for its repeating four-note pattern, which creates a rapid, ringing effect throughout the piece. While the English version focuses on Christmas bells and seasonal celebration, “Shchedryk” originally had a different subject connected with prosperity and the coming of spring. This distinction is important because the melody itself predates the familiar English Christmas text.
Pentatonix’s performance highlights the dramatic rhythm and vocal complexity of the composition, giving the traditional melody a modern a cappella treatment. Today, “Carol of the Bells” is strongly associated with Christmas concerts, recordings and holiday programming. Its combination of Ukrainian musical heritage, English Christmas lyrics and an instantly recognizable melody has helped it become one of the most distinctive songs of the season.
