Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town
It’s all cold down along the beach
The wind’s whipping down the boardwalk
Hey band!
(Yeah? Hey, babe!) You guys know what time of year it is?
(Yeah!) What time, huh? What? (Christmas time!)
What? (Christmas time!) Oh, Christmas time!
You guys all, you guys all been good and practicing real hard?
Yeah? Clarence, you been, you been rehearsing real hard now,
So Santa’ll bring you a new saxophone, right?
Everybody out there been good, or what?
Oh, that’s not many, not many, you guys are in trouble out here!
Come on.
Yeah, you better watch out, you better not cry
You better not pout, I’m telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town

He’s making a list, he’s checkin’ it twice
He’s gonna find out whose naughty or nice
Santa Claus is coming to town

He sees you when you’re sleeping
He knows when you’re awake
He knows if you’ve been bad or good
You better be good for goodness sake
(You better be good for goodness sake)
Oh, you better watch out, you better not cry
You better not pout, I’m telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town

(Ho ho ho ho!)
He sees you when you’re sleeping
He knows when you’re awake
He knows if you’ve been bad or good
You better be good for goodness sake
(Better be good for goodness sake)
You better watch out, you better not cry
You better not pout, I’m telling you why

About the carol Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town
“Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town” was written by John Frederick Coots and Haven Gillespie and first performed on radio in 1934. The song quickly became one of the most popular Christmas songs in America, with many artists recording their own versions. Bruce Springsteen released a rock interpretation in 1975, bringing the traditional song into a more energetic style.
The song focuses on the anticipation of Santa Claus arriving on Christmas Eve. It describes Santa as someone who knows whether children have behaved well and who brings gifts to those on his list. The lyrics capture the excitement children feel while waiting for Santa’s arrival and preparing for Christmas morning.
Bruce Springsteen’s version transforms the traditional song with a lively rock arrangement and a concert-like atmosphere. While keeping the familiar Christmas story, his performance adds a sense of energy and fun. The song remains closely connected to Christmas because it represents one of the most recognizable traditions of the holiday: the belief in Santa Claus and the excitement of receiving gifts.
