Silent Night
Silent night, holy night
All is calm and all is bright
‘Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant, so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
Silent night, holy night
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from Heaven afar
Heavenly Hosts sing Alleluia
Christ, the Savior, is born
Christ, the Savior, is born
Silent night, holy night
Child of heaven, oh how bright
Thou didst smile when thou wast born
Blessed be that happy morn
Full of heavenly joy
Full of heavenly joy

About the carol Silent Night
““Silent Night” is one of the world’s best-known Christmas carols. The original German title is “Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht.” The words were written by Austrian priest Joseph Mohr in 1816, while the melody was composed by Franz Xaver Gruber in 1818. The song was first performed on Christmas Eve in 1818 at St. Nicholas Church in Oberndorf, Austria, with Mohr singing and playing the guitar while Gruber sang the bass part. Stille Nacht Oberndorf
The carol describes the peaceful night surrounding the birth of Jesus. Its simple language and gentle melody focus on the newborn Christ, Mary and the sense of peace surrounding the Nativity. The song’s quiet character makes it different from more lively Christmas carols, emphasizing reflection, faith and the sacred atmosphere of Christmas.
Bing Crosby recorded “Silent Night” several times, including a 1942 recording that became part of his classic Christmas repertoire. A later 1947 recording was included on his Merry Christmas album. Wikipedia Crosby’s warm, restrained vocal style helped make his interpretation a familiar part of Christmas listening. Today, “Silent Night” remains closely associated with Christmas Eve, church services and peaceful holiday gatherings.”
